Refurbishment of Jacques Brel Professional Secondary School

Education & Research

Refurbishment of a 700 pupils Secondary School (general, technical, scientific and industrial teaching) including classrooms, workshops, a restaurant and staff accommodation.

The refurbishment of Jacques Brel Professional Secondary School represents the opportunity to provide the building with an urban face. Indeed, the secondary school buildings date from the 1970’s and will mostly be demolished.

The front square gives enough space for access whilst the facade of the school is treated with a big awning that integrates a shelter for bicycles. A conic prow marks the entrance of the building and ends into long central circulation that brings together the different entities of the programme: a bright course that insures a good legibility of the whole architecture, offers welcoming spaces and helps to control the whole building. Spaces are brought together according to their nature and to a rigorous division, allowing a good quality of use and adaptation through time.

This architecture, in close relation with its environment, offers a balance between contextual and functional, technical and welcoming.
