Urban planning

Redevelopment of Nina Simone and Joan Miro boulevards in Montpellier

Since 2003, the City of Montpellier has undertaken an urban definition study for the Port Marianne - Parc Marianne mixed development zone. They aim at turning this new district into the future city centre for the conurbation and create an area where high living standards and sustainable development can combine.

In order to do so, Architecture-Studio has imagined a social connection space for the districts’ inhabitants. Thus, Nina Simone and Joan Miro boulevards have been revegetated and equipped with wide pedestrian alleys and benches. Trees thus recall the nearby park and somehow “extend” the lungs of the new city centre.

Sustainable transport is given particular attention:
- sidewalks are equipped with bicyle lanes;
- pedestrian paths enable people to have access to public transport means and to the main spots of this mixed development area (retail outlets, places of worship, tramway stations, Marianne park, Lironde etc). This mixed development zone is located near the future République mixed development area.
